The intriguing title of .472 refers to the area in km² covered by the location map of OVADA in Oxford. Students from Oxford Brookes Foundation, specialising in Fine Art, have used the map as a starting point for creating artwork. They were encouraged to spend time walking the area, researching the history of the site and investigating anything that sparked their imagination. Ideas have been flooding in – one of the students booked themselves onto a ghost hunt at the Castle, another contacted the St Thomas Nursery to do a painting workshop with the children, others have spent hours looking and picking up objects of interest! History has caught their attention from stories about the drunken fights of Oxford graduates, the setting for Chaucer’s Millers Tale, industrial heritage and the storage of meat and animals. Everyone has been amazed by the life of a small area of Oxford, its dynamics range from a Burlesque club, terraces of charming houses, a river, places of worship and shelter for many homeless people.
This exhibition is an example of a ‘live’ project run by Oxford Brookes Foundation course that helps students understand their future career. For many of the students it will be their first exhibition opportunity, with work carefully selected by Lucy Phillips – Arts Coordinator for OVADA. The students will be on hand to discuss their work throughout the weekend exhibition.
