Grassroots to Gallery – the Importance of the Archive

Join panelists Catherine Flood, Phoenix Rainbow and George Stewart Lockhart to explore the value of the archive and look at protest objects both inside and outside of the gallery system.
Catherine Flood – curator of the insightful Disobedient Objects exhibition at the V&A (July 2014 – February 2015) which examined the powerful role of objects in movements for social change.
Phoenix Rainbow – activist and co-ordinator of a new grassroots exhibition / mobile archiving project, about campaign movements from 1992-2015, covering road protests, international summits, climate change, Occupy and more!
George Stewart-Lockhart – Artist, curator, writer and republisher of ‘Writing on the Wall‘ by Roger Perry, which had been out of print for over 40 years. Perry produced some of the earliest known photos of London’s burgeoning graffiti scene.

Poetry Can F*ck Off!
Heathcote Williams’ radical new work, Poetry Can F*ck Off is coming to OVADA! Featuring an open-mic invitation to share the words that have shaken your world… In this show produced by the Brighton based company Brainfruit, leading spoken word artists give voice to Williams’ extraordinary text. They demonstrate how the right words in the right place get under the skin of those in power and bring about social justice and lasting change.
Quoting, in quick-fire succession, the lyrics and verse of Jim Morrison, Billie Holiday, Sophie Scholl, Martin Luther King, William Blake, Arundhati Roy, Victor Jara, Gil Scott-Heron, Lupe Fiasco and many others, the event is a celebration of those who have spoken out against tyranny while making our hearts pound.
It will be performed by award-winning performers Roy Hutchins, Sameena Zehra, Selina Nwulu, Jonny Fluffypunk and a host of special guests – and underscored with live, original music from Dr Blue.

Domestic Extremists: The Surveillance of Journalists

Six members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ), including comedian and journalist Mark Thomas are taking legal action against the Metropolitan Police’s monitoring and keeping of their information on a database that deals with extremists. An illustrated talk by four of those in the case discuss how journalists documenting protest are coming under surveillance. The panel includes photojournalist and campaign photographer Jess Hurd, Video Journalist Jason N Parkinson and Photographer David Hoffman, chaired by curator of Resistance is Fertile and photographer, Adrian Arbib.

Hammer & Tongue Poetry Slam
Returning to their political roots, the UK’s poetry slam people Hammer & Tongue visit OVADA for the first time to present the best in touring Spoken Word. Set amongst OVADA’s Resistance is Fertile exhibition, the slam features a number of creative responses to the idea of ‘protest’.

The award-winning video journalist and campaign filmmaker, Zoe Broughton, has spent more than 20 years putting herself on the frontline – going undercover at an animal-testing lab, being chased by police while filming on a high-speed motor boat and dodging landmines in Burma! Zoe presents an illustrated talk about her work for June’s Stammtisch.

Funding the Arts: Where do we draw the line?

A discussion about the ethics of Arts Sponsorship with Jeremy Spafford, Director of Arts at the Old Fire Station, Niko O’Brien, Founder of Tandem Festival and representatives from arts activists Art Not Oil – a network dedicated to taking creative disobedience against institutions such as Tate, National Portrait Gallery and the British Museum until they drop their oil company funding. Together the panel will explore the ethics of sponsorship at a time where funding for the arts continues to be drastically cut. Who is it acceptable to take money from and what is the price that we pay?
