Photography, Experience & Memory (or ’How Photography Ruined Your Life’)
14 September – 5 October 2014
Preview: Saturday 13 September 2014, 6-9pm
As part of the inaugural Photography Oxford Festival, SOUVENIRS explores our relationship with photography as keepsake; the image as a record of experience or repository of memory in the light of the 21st century’s accelerated means of production and consumption of photography, of expanded information exchange, and of the triumphant ubiquity of the image. In the age of selfies, Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest, this exhibition examines the impulse to transform experience into image; present into past, and how the very parameters of experience might be dictated by the increasingly meaningless criteria of what is ’Photogenic.’
The exhibition includes award-winning work by Clarita Lulic, who uses photography to explore self-portraiture and cruise ship culture. Clarita is a visual artist specialising in lens based media, sculpture and performance. Born in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, Clarita gained her BA in Contemporary Photographic Practice from Northumbria University and later returned there to complete a graduate fellowship and artist residency. Clarita is a British Fulbright Scholar and currently lives in Tempe, Arizona whilst completing an MFA in Studio Art (emphasis in Photography) at Arizona State University.
Open: Daily, 10am – 5pm
