Sculptural Ceramics with Kashmira Patel: Saturday 28 Sept and Saturday 12 October, 10-4pm

from £150.00

When? Saturday 28 Sept and Saturday 12 October, 10-4pm

What? In these workshops you will be shown basic hand-building techniques using slabs, pinching, moulding, coiling and using different textures as well as how to use glazes. Kashmira will lead the workshop in two sessions and you will experience the feel of ‘play with clay’, as she describes her ceramic art practice.

On Saturday 28 September, you will have a basic introduction to the materials and different types of hand-building techniques. You will be given white or brown clay and with some guidance, will use your imagination and creativity to create your own pieces. Different kinds of moulds and texture tools will be provided. There will also be some finished pieces on show for your inspiration.

Your pieces will then be left to dry for about 10 days, bisque fired and will be waiting for you at OVADA for the next session.

On Saturday 12 October, your pieces will be ready for glazing. Using oxides, glazes and techniques, you will finish your pieces before they are fired again for the final time.

At the end of these two sessions, you will have your own ceramic pieces to take home. These can be collected from OVADA after their final firing and there will be an opportunity for an informal feedback session to discuss and share the pieces you have created.

Meet the Facilitator: ‘I love to work with my hands - infusing life and strength into the ceramics I create. My forms abound with strength and energy, and organically goes with the 'flow' - as I like to play with the clay and let it take form with shapes and textures as I go along. My creations stem from a single idea in mind, in a process that is not methodical, led by the heart and feelings. Aiming to be imperfectly perfect, with rough and smooth textures, my works are tactile, symbolic, and intriguing to the viewer.

My passion with clay evolved after many years of brush stroking techniques on bisque ware. I love creating organic forms, defying the normal structures of figurines, bowls or any other daily use items..

I find that working with oxides, greens and blues give me a great sense of staying connected to the earth and water and my works emerge as grounded and minimal pieces that meld with nature. Groggy surfaces that contrast with smooth and crackle glazes. My inspiration also comes from the Japanese philosophy of ‘wabi-sabi’ –‘ imperfectly perfect’.

My sculptures tend be linear, feminine with sense of flow and energy in them. Modern Art Oxford, Oxford Art Society, West Ox Arts are venues where my sculptures and ceramics have been displayed.’
